PHOENIX – President Donald Trump still trails Democrat Joe Biden in a new poll of likely Arizona voters, but he’s cut the gap again.

The OH Predictive Insights poll released Monday found Biden up 49%-45%, but it’s the third consecutive month the Republican incumbent has whittled down the difference.

In a similar poll in July, Biden was ahead 49%-44%. In May, he led 50%-43%.

The Phoenix-based phone survey of 603 registered voters was conducted Aug. 3-4.

“Arizona has absolutely earned its battleground status,” OH Predictive Insights chief of research Mike Noble told KTAR News 92.3 FM after the poll was out.

Trump made up ground with independents, Noble said, although Biden still led in that group 49%-39%.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4%.

Noble also said another factor in Trump’s improved numbers is spending.

“He is outspending Biden’s team when it come to broadcasts in Arizona,” Noble said.

Trump’s approval rating went up a bit, from 46% to 47% from last month.

According to poll tracking website FiveThirtyEight.com, Biden is leading Trump by 3.7 percentage points in the average of all Arizona presidential polls and 8.3 points in the national poll average.
